Abstract

Appendicitis is the most common surgical emergency in childhood. The management of appendicitis has undergone a dramatic shift over the last few decades as a result of several randomized controlled trials and large retrospective database reviews. The implementation of these data in a protocolized fashion is perhaps the best example in pediatric surgery of evidence-based medicine shifting the care of a common diagnosis. Laparoscopic appendectomy is the gold-standard operative approach; however, nonoperative management in properly selected patients has been gaining traction through several studies in both adults and children as a valid treatment alternative.
