Description
Objective: Attendance at faculty education sessions is not well characterized. At an academic children’s hospital, anecdotal observations suggested diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) education was typically attended by underrepresented in medicine (UIM) junior female faculty. This study examined: 1) faculty demographics at faculty development (FD) and Grand Rounds (GR) sessions, 2) demographics at DEI vs non-DEI sessions, and 3) impact of George Floyd’s death on attendance. Methods: We assessed faculty attendance at FD and GR sessions (July 2019-June 2022). Sessions were classified as DEI/non-DEI using published titles/objectives and DEI keywords. We used logistic regressions to examine relationships and interactions among variables. We controlled for gender and UIM status to isolate possible relationships within academic rank and department. Results: DEI session attendance was higher among female vs male (FD: OR 2.60, CI 2.03-3.33; GR: OR 1.15, CI 1.01-1.32) and UIM vs White (FD: OR 2.48, CI 1.98-3.10; GR: OR 2.54, CI 2.19-2.95) faculty. Controlling for gender and UIM status, DEI attendance was more common among department of pediatrics (DOP) vs non-DOP faculty (FD: OR 1.66, CI 1.36-2.02; GR: OR 2.87, CI 2.38-3.46) and professors vs assistant professors (FD: OR 1.81, CI 1.23-2.66; GR: OR 4.57, CI 3.95-5.29). Floyd’s death had no impact on attendance (FD: p=0.672; GR: p=0.245). Conclusions: Female, UIM, DOP, and professors were more likely to attend DEI education sessions compared to their counterparts, raising the possibility of DEI educational gaps among faculty. Further research should explore barriers and alternative strategies to engage broader faculty participation in DEI education
