Description
In 2022, Children’s Mercy Hospital (CMH) implemented a new clinical practice guideline (CPG) recommending single-dose dexamethasone as the first line oral steroid for treatment of mild to moderate acute asthma exacerbations. We assessed the impact of this CPG change on readmission rates after discharge from emergency department/urgent care (ED/UC). We hypothesized that single-dose dexamethasone would be non-inferior to a 5-day course of prednisone/prednisolone with respect to 7-day and 30-day acute care readmission rates and need for additional outpatient steroid courses.
