Abstract

Endoscopy is a means of directly observing the upper and lower genital tract in children and adolescents. These procedures include vaginoscopy, colposcopy, and hysteroscopy. Endoscopy can be utilized in both clinical and operating room settings, with the use of local or general anesthesia, respectively. The procedure allows for evaluation of the genital tract with minimal tissue trauma and patient discomfort. While hysteroscopy is reserved for postmenarchal patients, vaginoscopy can be performed at any age, including newborns and children. Knowledge of available instruments, distention media, and patient positioning promotes safety and efficacy while lowering the risk of complications.
