Abstract
Pediatric head and neck lesions span a broad spectrum of diagnoses including traumatic, neoplastic, congenital, and infectious etiologies. Congenital cysts, sinuses, and fistulae in the neck result from the abnormal persistence of normal embryological structures. A detailed understanding of the embryology of the head and neck is crucial to understanding these structures' embryological origins and their mature structures. A working knowledge of head and neck anatomy is essential to providing the correct treatment and avoiding recurrence. Throughout this chapter, we review the embryologic origins, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of the most common congenital head and neck malformations. Commonly encountered head and neck inflammatory lesions are also discussed.
