Dystonia Type 1 (DYT1): DBS Treatment Leads to Near Resolution of Symptoms

Michael Smith
Brian Aalbers, Children's Mercy Hospital

Description

As early as kindergarten, Autumn Nelson experienced problems controlling her left hand. By the time she was just eight years old, muscle spasms caused her to sometimes fling her pencil across the room, making it difficult for the left-handed student to complete her assignments.

Tiffannie, Autumn’s mother, scheduled an appointment for Autumn with Brian Aalbers, DO, one of just a handful of fellowship-trained movement disorders specialists in the United States, and a Children’s Mercy pediatric neurologist. Dr. Aalbers characterized Autumn’s first appointment with him as nothing short of “serendipitous,” leading to a diagnosis and treatment plan within a few days.
