Abstract
Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common condition managed by pediatric orthopedic and spinal surgeons. With increased focus on cost efficiency and patient outcomes, considerable efforts have been made to enhance value when treating AIS. For example, many surgeons have adopted enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols, reducing blood loss and shortening both hospital stays and intensive care unit (ICU) utilization. In addition, some hospitals have standardized resource use, streamlined surgical teams, and implemented measures to reduce infection rates. Lastly, our understanding of the natural progression of untreated AIS has improved, and offering a nonsurgical management option for some patients adds value.
