Abstract
Acquired anorectal disorders are common in the pediatric population. In this chapter, the presentation and management of the most common benign anorectal disease processes encountered in pediatric surgery will be reviewed including rectal prolapse, perianal and perirectal abscesses, and fistula-in-ano. The algorithm for managing and treating rectal prolapse, the main procedural treatment strategies for abscesses, and the operative steps of a fistulotomy for fistula-in ano are also described. An overview of the treatment of other disorders such as anal fissures, skin tags, hemorrhoids, rectal polyps, and perianal vascular lesions is also included. Finally, an overview of the workup and treatment of accidental and nonaccidental rectal injuries is reviewed.
